The post title is a little eye-catching, I admit. That's on purpose. Here's what I'm talking about:
It is a part of human nature for a person to desire vengeance for some misdeed committed against him. That desire becomes more pronounced and more entrenched the longer that misdeed (read: oppression) continues. I believe this common, natural desire is what prompted the inflamed and vitriolic statements of Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama's former preacher. Make no mistake, I am not excusing his behavior. Rather, I am explaining to you its natural existence.
One might say that the statements of Wright are so vitriolic and extreme as to go beyond mere vengeance, or the desire for it. Again, this is natural. Consider a man's base inclinations: when he is oppressed, he seeks to overthrow his oppressor and subject his oppressor to oppression. Often this desire is disguised under the title of "equality." That is, the oppressed does not claim to desire superiority, but only equality with his oppressor. However, his words spoken in secret betray his public rhetoric. In other words, he will cry equality in public, but in his heart be seeking to oppress. This is not uncommon.
Now, apply this natural desire to the current situation. Jeremiah Wright, no doubt, experienced many forms of racism as a young man. And no doubt these experiences helped to form his current views. That is, he was oppressed for years; his people were oppressed for years; and now Wright seeks "equality" by claiming that white people are all racists, set against the black man; that whites gave blacks drugs for the purpose of keeping them in poverty or jail; that the attacks of 9-11 were our "chickens coming home to roost." To his mind, there will be no justice until whites become the servants of blacks - for him, I conclude, that means Barack Obama must be President. Once Obama is President, there will be no one greater, no white man greater, than Obama. Finally, the "equality" he desires will be fulfilled. The slave shall become the master.
Lastly, I feel compelled to add, because there will no doubt be some reader who will construe my words to mean that the proper place of blacks and whites is that of slave and master. Make no mistake, this is not my intent nor my meaning. Rather, I am explaining to you the mentality of Jeremiah Wright and those like him. I do NOT believe that any man is less than any other merely because of his color.
